The 2008 MACHE Conference Is History...
...but the memories are still fresh. Starting on Thursday afternoon, over 300 new homeschoolers met together and heard from various speakers and members of the MACHE Board. They heard topics, such as "Getting Off to a Great Start", "Why Am I REALLY Doing This?", and "Learning Styles"; and then they had an open question and answer session where the attendees could ask those questions which concerned them most.
While these new homeschoolers were being encouraged, area pastors were meeting in another part of the building with Pastor David Watkins to discuss how to understand the homeschoolers in their congregations. A couple of pastors acknowledged that they were coerced into coming to ‘this meeting’, but now are grateful that someone in their congregation knew that they ‘needed to hear’ this vital discussion.
The Conference was held April 17 - 19, 2008, at the DECC in Duluth, Minnesota. It had a total of 92 MACHE and Exhibitor workshops and 217 Exhibit Hall Booths. In addition, HSLDA’s Generation Joshua had over 300 teens attend their iAdvocate track. The 4,800 attendees were very busy! From the comments we overheard as people were coming from the workshops, they were very encouraged about homeschooling and were anxious to get home to start applying some of the techniques that they had just learned.
We had a great group of speakers for the 2008 Conference! Keynote Speaker was Dr. Jeff Myers, and Featured Speakers were Dianne Craft and Steve and Teri Maxwell. Attendees also heard from Mary James, Dari Mullins, Chris Hogan, Nancy Kelly, Dr. Rebecca Keller, Chris and Wendy Jeub, Tom Clark, Chris and Donna Johnson, Kay and Julie Hiramine, Jason Gudim, David and Linda Watkins, and Sarah Mally.
Support Group Leaders had their own special Symposium with two great speakers — Dr. Jeff Myers, MACHE’s Keynote Speaker, and Mike Donnelly, Minnesota’s own HSLDA lawyer. Each Support Group represented at the Symposium was given a free copy of "The Trojan Horse" DVD to take home to show to their groups.
The 2008 MACHE Conference marked the beginning of MACHE’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. We ‘unveiled’ our new logo design and introduced MACHE’s new Special Needs Coordinator, Peggy Ployhar. (Watch for the new link to our "Special Needs" webpage.) The Paper MACHE newsletter has a new look, also in celebration of our anniversary. More events will occur during the next year and will culminate with the 2009 MACHE Conference.
The 2009 MACHE Conference and Curriculum Fair will be held April 2 - 4, 2009, at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, Minnesota. Our Conference Theme will be "In Pursuit of Excellence". The Keynote Speaker for this very special event will be Michael Farris of Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and Chancellor of Patrick Henry College.
We hope you enjoy the slide show of 2008 Conference pictures (above); and we hope that you will plan on being with us next year for our 25th Anniversary Celebration!
