Working Scholarships Are Available

The annual MACHE Conference and Curriculum Fair is a huge effort and requires the help of many volunteers to make an event of this magnitude run smoothly. In exchange for several hours of dedicated volunteer help before, during, and after the 2010 conference, MACHE will issue a "Working Scholarship", which consists of volunteers having their conference registration fees waived.

There are several types of volunteer projects available and can be done by dads, moms, and responsible young adults. A few involve working before the conference; but most involve helping in registration, or being a host, hostess or student helper. We also need men to help with security. Family groups can work together in some areas.

Volunteers would work for about five to six hours on one day and, in most cases, would receive on-site training. The only pre-requisites to receiving a "Working Scholarship" are that volunteers must be current MACHE members and they must have attended at least one MACHE Conference in the past.

Some of the jobs MACHE needs help with are listed below.

Registration-
  • Being available for a training session on Friday morning promptly at 7:00 a.m. (This would include even those who work one of the later shifts.) Thursday workers would receive individual on-site training on Thursday late morning.
  • Greeting and handing out Conference Packets/badge holders to Pre-registered attendees.
  • Registering ‘on-site’ attendees.
  • Working one shift on Thursday afternoon during the Special Session, or working one of three shifts during the two-day conference (Friday morning, Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning).

Host/Hostess-

  • Being available for a training session on Friday morning promptly at 7:00 a.m. (This would include even those who work only on Saturday.) Thursday workers would receive individual on-site training on Thursday late morning.
  • Greeting/serving/introducing the workshop speakers.
  • Answering questions from attendees.
  • Tactfully handling any problems that occur.
  • Keeping 'time' for the speaker.
  • Distributing handouts/collecting questionnaires.
  • Working in the same room during the workshops scheduled on one day (Thursday, Friday, or Saturday). You are required to work only one day. You will need to remain in the room during the entire workshop.

Set-Up-

  • Availability on Thursday to help us unload and set-up equipment, move Exhibitors into the ExHall, prepare Exhibitor Info packets, distribute handouts to workshop rooms, general preparations, act as Security for Thursday sessions, etc.
  • Some jobs require the ability to lift heavy loads; most do not.
  • Some of these jobs begin at 8:00 on Thursday morning, with different shifts beginning throughout the day until the work is completed.

Security-

  • Availability for a training session promptly at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning. (This would include those who are working on Saturday.)
  • Ability to control people traffic, particularly at Registration lines, at entrances to the Used Curriculum area, and at entrances to the Exhibit Hall.
  • This is not the same as the Building Security or parking attendants supplied by the facility.
  • Occasionally, will be needed to tactfully handle difficult people.
  • MACHE would prefer men to do this job.
  • Should be available to work one of four shifts during the weekend (Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon).

Student Helpers-

  • Availability for a training session promptly at 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Those who choose to work on Saturday only, should plan to meet your chairman at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning for your assignment.
  • Should be at least 16 years of age and must be mature, responsible, and dependable.
  • Willingness to do odd jobs, such as distribute 'non-exhibitor' bags, man pre-registration tables, distribute lunches and water to the Exhibitors, assist with recording workshops, help in the office, be available to help exhibitors pack up and move their product out on Saturday evening, etc.
  • Should be willing to work one whole day.

Tear Down-

  • Availability to help pack up supplies and load truck to return home.
  • This would begin on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. and continue until around 7:00, or until the work is completed.
  • Most of this job requires heavy lifting, but there are some areas where the work would be lighter-weight.
  • This would be an excellent job for a family group with teenage boys.
