OPTIMIST CLUB SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES!

The St. Paul Optimist Club sponsors two contests that students may wish to participate in. Rules are available at: www.optimist.org.

  • What: 2010 Optimist International Essay Contest:
    “The Internet: Today's Evolution or Tomorrow's Menace?"
  • Who: Open to students under age 19 as of 12/31/09.
  • When: Deadline: February 20, 2010
  • Why: Opportunity to win $150 from the St. Paul Optimist Club and to compete for a District $2,500 scholarship. The District winner advances to compete for International $2,250, $3,750 and $6000 scholarships.

    Electronic submission required. Hard copy appreciated.

National Rifle Association Youth Education Summit
An experience of a lifetime!

The National Rifle Association is currently accepting applications from outstanding high school sophomores and juniors to participate in the 14th annual NRA Y.E.S. program July 12-18, 2010, in Washington, D.C. Click here for more information, and to apply online.
$30,000 in college scholarship money is available. The application deadline is March 1, 2010.

An Essential Debate Workshop
with round table discussion

Speaker:
Peter van Elswyk

Peter van Elswyk is an experienced competitor, coach, and teacher of debate. As a competitor for nearly 7 years in high school and then in college, Peter made eliminations round at every tournament he ever attended. While a college freshmen and sophomore he had the most successful win/loss record for an underclassmen and finished his competitive career in 2007 ranked as the #1 NPDA competitor in the country. Peter has been coaching debate for over four years. In that time, his debaters have reached late elimination rounds at every major NFL-LD tournament in the country including Berkeley, Harvard, UCLA, and NFL Nationals. Peter is also a curriculum director for the VB Institute, the leading summer debate institute for NFL-LD, where he has been employed since 2005. Peter graduated from Biola University with a bachelors degree in philosophy, and is currently the assistant debate coach at Harvard-Westlake School and Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles.

Mr. van Elswyk will develop the workshop material to meet the level of skill of the debaters attending. Your specific topics or interests can be included. Please relay these via email with registration.

Topics may include:

General:
Debate research, case writing, rebuttal strategy, evidence comparison,

Team Policy:
Plan writing, writing pre-emptive arguments into constructives, answering counterplans, and impact comparison.

Lincoln Douglas:
How to strategically choose definitions, provide value/criterion tips and tricks, and warrant comparison

Speech Opportunities for Students !!

Listed below are some great opportunities for MNHS&D students to use their speech talents. Many of these offer cash or other prizes and winners may go on to national competition.

The American Legion holds an annual State Oratorical Contest. See http://www.mnlegion.org/html/oratorical.html or contact Heidi Cook at heidicook123@aol.comfor more information.

The Influential Women Essay Contest is hosted by Ridgedale library and the American Association of University Women Minnesota. This starts as a writing contest but if you advance you present your essay as a speech. See http://www.hclib.org/teens/influentialwomenentry.cfm or call Amy McNally at 952-847-8832.

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life local oratory contests are held throughout the state. The state office can put students in touch with local coordinators. See http://www.mccl.org/Page.aspx?pid=404 for information on this competition.

The Minnesota Historical Society hosts the annual Minnesota History Day where students make history come alive with exhibits, original performances, documentaries, and historical research papers. See www.mnhs.org/school/historyday for more on this event.
