ERIK NELSON (1862 - 1939)  was born in Orebro, Sweden to Lutheran parents. While he was in elementary school, his parents became Baptists. A few years later, Erik's family immigrated to America because, as Baptists, they could not support the Swedish state church. They settled in Kansas, and there Erik became a cattle-herder. Due to family duties, Erik's formal education ended with the fourth grade. In Kansas, he was converted at a revival meeting held in a building that his father had built. Soon afterwards, he became a "cowboy" in Texas and Oklahoma. He began to study geography because he grew tired of the open prairie. Brazil became his dream spot. He eventually did go to Brazil as a missionary and served there many years. He was the first person to build an oil-burning boat in the Amazon river valley. Today, he is referred to as "The Apostle of the Amazon."
