LORENCE NIGHTINGALE(1820 - 1910) , for her pioneering development of military and civilian nursing and of hospital care, is universally regarded as the founder of trained nursing as a profession for women. Her work made her a legend in her own time. She also made important contributions to the welfare of the soldier in peace and war, to military and civil hygiene, and to the foundation of British district nursing and the training of midwives.
