JOHN WANAMAKER  was a businessman who began the "department store." He was always guided in business by Christian principles. In 1858 he was elected first salaried secretary of the YMCA. Later he founded Bethany Industrial College. His concept of business was that the customer was his guest. His stores were the first to have public facilities such as restrooms, telephones, etc.. Late in life he was elected president of The International Sunday School Association.
