IRA SANKEY (1840-1908) was the song leader and soloist for the crusades that D.L. Moody led throughout America, England, and Scotland. He is generally considered to be the man who ushered in the "Gospel Song Era." He accompanied himself on a small organ. He even used his organ in Scotland, where it is said of organs that there is a devil in every pipe. He also published his songs, and made millions of dollars for the Lord's work through the sales of his hymnals.
